Ecological Scoping or Phase 1 Surveys

It is now standard practice for Local Authorities to request information concerning protected species on a given site prior to determining a planning application. This information can be gathered by undertaking initial ecological survey work, a process variously called; an "ecological scoping survey", "Phase 1 survey" or "protected species risk assessment".

This survey work is usually the starting point when assessing the potential impact of a proposed development on habitats and species.

The scoping survey can be undertaken at any time of year and preferably at the earliest possible project stage. An early indication of potential biodiversity issues can be critical in determining the cost and programming of works, and informing the design process.

Detailed surveys for protected species can only be undertaken at specific times of year. An early assessment of the need for detailed surveys ensures that survey periods are not missed, avoiding delays to the progress of the project.
